MISSION AND PURPOSE

The Hawaii Coalition Against Legalized Gambling (HCALG) is an alliance of organizations and citizens united in our commitment to a concerted effort to prevent the introduction of legalized gambling into the State of Hawaii.  Membership and supporters of the Coalition include civic, conservation, education, environment, law enforcement, political, public health, religious, senior citizen, small business, youth and other community organizations.

The purpose of the Coalition is to 1) education the public on the overwhelming negative impact of legalized gambling; and 2) defeat any attempts to introduce legalized gambling into the State of Hawaii.

HCALG was incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)3 in September, 1999.

THE IMPACT OF GAMBLING ON WOMEN,

CHILDREN & FAMILIES

A Presentation By

THE HAWAI’I COALITION AGAINST LEGALIZED GAMBLING

In Cooperation With

Hawaii Commission on the Status of Women

and Women’s Health Month

As a part of Women’s Health Month, the Hawaii Coalition Against Legalized Gambling (HCALG), in cooperation with the Hawaii Commission on the Status of Women, will present an informational session entitled, “The Impact of Gambling on Women, Children and Families.”  The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2006, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Avenue, in Weaver Hall.

“Our aim is to educate the public on the overwhelming negative impact of legalized gambling on the health and well being of women and the family,” said Judy A. Rantala, President of the Hawaii Coalition Against legalized Gambling.

The program includes information from a variety of sources, including Dean Harvest, a successful 15-year recovering gambling addict will who talk about his experiences are a problem gambler and the impact upon his family.  Dr. Violet Horvath, a professor at the University of Hawaii School of Social Work and member of HCALG Board of Directors, studies disordered gambling.  She will present information on types of gamblers and discuss related health and mental health problems for women, children, and families, whether a woman is a problem gambler herself or is in a relationship with or related to someone who has a problem with gambling.  Excerpts from a film depicting effects of gambling on children and families will be shown.

Daniel Blackwood, Executive Program Director of the New Mexico Council for Problem Gambling, says “Women's health providers and women's groups really need to look at compulsive gambling as a women's health issue.” said Daniel Blackwood.

There is free parking off Bingham St., behind the church property.  Phone 808-595-7766 for more information.
